It is important to know your rights in terms of bereavement leaves. Although companies are not required to give bereavement leaves or any other leaves or absences for that matter, it is worthwhile to know that most companies in the US have specifically included in their employee handbook the rules and policies regarding bereavement leaves. In general, there are no specific Bereavement Pay Laws in the list of federal laws. The Bereavement Pay Laws is only specific to the company where you are working. If it is stated in the contract that you are to receive pay during your bereavement leave and doesn’t receive it, you can file a complaint or case in the civil court. Usually, when companies have this type of benefit, the equivalent pay is the maximum allowable number of days of leave. If for example, you take the time off for three days, then you can get a pay which is equivalent to three days. In order to enjoy the company’s benefit stemming from its own Bereavement Pay Laws, you have to submit certain requirements such as death certificate.

The main purpose of this type of pay is to avoid the loss of income on ht part of the employee in attending to this important family responsibility. Although not stipulated in the Federal law, this is regarded as an important process in attracting and retaining their valued employees. It is regarded
