When a family member passes away, it is natural for those who remain to comfort one another and take time to attend to final funeral arrangements. The family members who under the grieving process would want to worry about their job security the least. Bereavement leave is an employment benefit given to individuals who experience a loss in the family. There is no federal law in the United States that rule on bereavement leave. However, certain states have set up their own public policies in support to employees who need time off from work to attend to the funeral needs of the deceased.

Ohio bereavement laws have been established by the office of employee services of the state in order that the bereavement cases for employees on all companies be the same. The provisions of the Ohio bereavement laws are as follows:
? Full-time permanent employees of Ohio shall be granted bereavement leave with pay comprising of three consecutive eight-hour workdays. The bereavement pay is based on the current rate of the employees upon the passing away of their immediate family member.
? Part-time permanent employees shall be granted bereavement leave based on the number of hours they would have generally worked.
? Immediate family member is referred to as the spouse while significant other is referred to as any person who stands in the place of the spouse or any person who lives with the employee.
? The last provision of Ohio bereavement laws is that employees may be granted an additional vacation, sick, or personal leave to extend their bereavement leave.
