When a loved one dies, an individual who experienced the loss will naturally be put in the process of bereavement or grief. The knowledge that death is inevitable does not make the loss of a loved one any less painful. Those who remain must comfort one another and take some time off their regular schedules to attend to funeral needs and final arrangements. People who experience such loss want to worry about their jobs the least.

To attend to the needs of employees whose family members died, bereavement policies are established. There is no federal law that protects the rights of bereaved individuals, but certain states of the United States have set up their own public policies to respond to this employment need.
If you live in New York, you should know that there are no New York bereavement laws that will aid you to legally enjoy this employment benefit. New York bereavement laws are left to company policies and employers’ discretion.
Most companies allow their employers to avail of a three-day bereavement leave. Bereavement pay cannot be assured as it is decided by the company or employer himself. Also because no New York bereavement laws rule institutions, an employer may or may not grant bereavement leaves to his employees. He also is capable of legally discharging any employee who takes or requests bereavement leave. While most family-oriented companies do allow bereavement leave to their employees, they limit the number of days and establish conditions before availing of the privilege. Paying time off is also left to the discretion of the employer.
