Life After A Loss - 3 Ways To Survive Grief

6th September 2011 by Bereaved No Comments

In one way or another, every person is bound to face grief. At one point, everybody can lose someone significant like a next of kin, a buddy, a dog because death is inevitable. To understand grief better, one must see it as a complex reaction because grieving is not just apparent in the emotions projected by a person. In psychology, besides the affect or emotional response, grief can also bring about social, philosophical and physical reactions.

Say that somebody in the family died by coincidence. The immediate family may show signs of strong emotions like extreme dismay and anger. Physically, they may hit the walls or become suddenly speechless. Inability to sleep and nausea can also be observable. Socially, the bereaved can withdraw themselves from the crowd. Philosophical reactions on the other hand can be seen on the different beliefs, practices and faith of the affected family. It can either be a religious conviction or a stronger and renewed faith.

Since grieving and loss is inevitable, it can happen to a friend, a celebrity, a neighbor and you. To overcome grief and move on with life, here are suggested tips:

Know The Normal Process Of Grief
According to Kubler-Ross there are 5 stages of grief. Apparently, people can go through serious loss. However, there are times when they get stuck in one of the first four stages. For sure, life can be painful after a loss. But after the last stage, which is acceptance, one can move on with life. The five stages of grief are as follows:

First stage: Denial and Isolation; Second stage: Anger; Third Stage: Bargaining; Fourth stage: Depression; Fifth stage: Acceptance.

Remember that loss and death can affect people differently. Though it is hard, it is basic to move on and to accept that death is a fact of life. Release the pain to easily accept loss. If there’s anything that you should keep, keep the good recollections.

Find Support Groups And Friends Who Can Help You
You can count on true friends who will stick to you through thick and thin. Rely on true friends. Find ease and support in their kind words and deeds. Read their messages because they will strengthen your spirit and inspire you to move with life. However be careful and avoid people who camouflaged themselves as buddies. They are the ones who will entice you to try drugs and alcohol. These people are bad influence. You should not run to them for reassurance, rather these are the people you should get away from. Keep in mind that drugs and alcohol are not the best solutions to what is happening to you. They can only provide momentary relief and they can only delay your grieving. And you wouldn’t want that.

Discover Healthy Activities To Engage In
When you are alone, you think of almost everything notably if you are not doing anything. Just like what they say, the idler’s mind is the most wanted playground of the demon. Do not just bum around the house, doing nothing. Yes, for the first days, it is logical to withdraw yourself away from people. However it is not the end of the world. Find and engage in healthy activities that can consume your time like gardening indoors and going to place of worship. These endeavors can also help you discover that life is a gift and that everything happens for a reason. Seek meaning and purpose in your life.

Grieving is hard but people have survived. You can outlive grief and get back to life. Surround yourself with positivity and always stay strong. Consider the tips above and hold on to your faith. Learn by heart that life is too short. Your decision today can change what will happen to you in your future.
